Under a proposal backed by lawmakers, police, sheriffs and state patrol deputies in Nebraska would face greater accountability and have more yearly training, with a focus on de-escalating conflicts.

Senators gave the measure initial approval yesterday despite concerns from Senator John Lowe of Kearney who says some of the requirements in the bill would be difficult to enforce in rural areas.

The vote came one day after the Minneapolis court case and conviction following the death of George Floyd, an incident that sparked protests nationally, including in Nebraska, protests attended by Senator Terrel McKinney.

The bill passed on a 39-0 vote.
